Sri Lanka trip questions, answered.
The questions Dutch, Belgian, and Australian travellers ask most before booking a private driver-led trip. Anything not here, just ask us.
Do I need a private driver in Sri Lanka?
For most travellers, yes. Sri Lanka's road network is extensive but driving conditions are unfamiliar — left-hand traffic, narrow rural roads, livestock crossings, and a pace very different from Europe or Australia. A local driver also handles route changes, language, and the inevitable "what's that?" stops along the way. If you're confident on left-hand traffic and already comfortable on Asian roads, you can self-drive, but for a first trip a private driver is the more relaxing way to see the island.
How much does a private driver cost in Sri Lanka?
It depends on trip length, route, and group size. We quote each trip individually after a short conversation about your interests and dates. The price covers a private vehicle with driver, fuel, vehicle insurance, driver's accommodation and meals, airport transfers, and route planning support. You arrange your own hotels, restaurants, attraction tickets, and travel insurance. We send a clear written quote within 24 hours of you submitting the plan-a-trip form.
What's the best time of year to visit Sri Lanka?
Sri Lanka has two monsoons that hit different sides of the island, so the answer depends on which coast you want to focus on. December to March is best for the south and west coasts (Galle, Mirissa, Tangalle) and the cultural triangle (Sigiriya, Polonnaruwa, Anuradhapura). May to September is best for the east coast (Trincomalee, Pasikuda, Arugam Bay) and the north (Jaffna). The hill country (Ella, Nuwara Eliya, Kandy) is good year-round but driest December to March. For first trips, December–March is usually the safer pick.
How many days do I need for a Sri Lanka trip?
10 days is a comfortable minimum for a first trip — enough to see the cultural triangle, the hill country, and one beach. 14 days lets you add the south coast or the east, depending on the season. 18–21 days gives you the full island at an unhurried pace. We don't run trips shorter than 7 days because the distances and traffic make the effort-to-reward unfavourable.
Is Sri Lanka safe for tourists?
Yes, broadly. Sri Lanka is a stable, peaceful country with a long-established tourism industry. Standard travel hygiene applies — bottled or filtered water, busy restaurants for food, normal petty-theft caution in cities. Solo female travellers report Sri Lanka as one of the easier South Asian countries to travel in. We update guests on any specific local conditions before and during the trip, and we keep an eye on weather and road conditions throughout.
What's included in your private tour service?
Private vehicle with English-speaking driver, all fuel and vehicle insurance, airport pickup and drop-off, route planning support before the trip, flexible stops along the route, and WhatsApp support from the moment you book until you fly home. Driver's own accommodation and meals are also covered — you don't pay for those. You arrange your own hotels, restaurants, attraction entry fees, internal flights or trains, travel insurance, and personal expenses. We share recommendations at every price point if you'd like a starting list.
Can I customize my itinerary?
Yes — that's the core of the service. Our signature tours are starting points, not fixed packages. We adjust pace, add or remove stops, lengthen or shorten the trip, and reroute based on what you actually want to do. Tell us your interests, fitness level, and any "must-see" or "no-thanks" stops, and we'll send a draft itinerary within 24 hours. If you'd rather start from scratch, the custom-trip planner is built for that.
Do you arrange accommodation and meals?
No — and that's deliberate. We're not a fully packaged tour operator. You book hotels, restaurants, and most attraction tickets directly so you keep full control of the budget and style of your trip. We share recommendations at every price point if you'd like a starting list. This keeps the service flexible (you can change plans on the road without us being on the hook for non-refundable hotel bookings) and honest (we don't pad pricing with hidden margins on third-party services).
What kind of vehicle do you use?
Our primary vehicle is a comfortable, air-conditioned private van — used for couples, families, and solo travellers alike. The van gives everyone room to stretch out, easy luggage capacity, large windows for the scenery, and a smooth ride on long hill-country drives. Occasionally, after a conversation about your trip, a saloon car is a better fit (very small group, mostly city stops) — but we default to the van because comfort over a multi-day trip matters more than the slightly nimbler footprint of a car. The vehicle is reserved exclusively for your trip; nobody else shares it. We carry local vehicle insurance for the duration. If you have specific requirements (child seats, luggage capacity, accessibility), tell us when you enquire.
What's your cancellation policy?
More than 30 days before your tour start date, we refund the advance payment in full, less any non-refundable third-party costs we have already paid on your behalf. 14 to 30 days before, we refund 50% of the advance payment. Less than 14 days before, no refund of the advance payment, except in exceptional circumstances at our discretion. If we need to cancel — for example due to severe weather, force majeure, or our driver being unwell — we offer a full refund or, where possible, reschedule to a date that works for you.
How do I book a trip?
Submit the plan-a-trip form with your dates, rough interests, and number of travellers. We reply within 24 hours, usually with clarifying questions and a draft itinerary. Once you are happy with the route and pricing, an advance payment confirms the booking. The remaining balance is due before or during the trip, depending on the schedule we agree.
